Term 1 - Week 2 Update

Week One & Two has come & gone

So we  have already knocked over two weeks of Term 1. Things are back in full swing and we are looking to increase our presence int he community in 2014. I would like to thank everyone who returned this year and look forward to a big 2014.

BBQ Roster - AutoBarn

Thank you to those that have already signed up for the BBQ Roster at AutoBarn. Can I please ask that you all check the roster out at the front desk in the main den and slot yourself in. Remember fundraising is a necessary evil to help offset the costs. The fees would need to increase by $3 a week to cover the short fall. We need everyone helping to ensure we only have to do one of the AutoBarn BBQ's for the year. 2.5 hours on a Saturday is not much to ask for - we have 9 BBQ's to cover from March 15 onwards.

Sign on Day Success

Last weekend saw the group set up camp at the Beenleigh Marketplace. The aim was to raise awareness of the group in the wider community and to increase our numbers in Joey Scouts and Venturer Scouts. What a successful weekend it turned out to be. We are looking at six new Joey Scouts and a strong potential for three Venturer Scouts. These Venturer Scouts are members that left Scouting and are looking to return.

Add to this a waiting list for Cub Scouts (3) and Scouts (9) we are looking very healthy.

Car Boot Sale, Cake Stall and Car Wash

March 1, 7 am to 12 pm will be the Group first of two events for this fundraiser.

Calling all bakers - we need your help in catering for this event. Please drop your goods off Friday night Feb 28 or early March 1. Help on the stall would be a big help too.

We are also looking for those that are keen to help man the BBQ for this fundraiser also.

Seeking Leaders

Are you someone that likes to get down with your kids? Do you want to earn certifications and experience that can assist in your  day job? We are looking for leaders continuously. The Cub Scout section is seeking your help as one Leader is about to take a journey for three months overseas and we need your help to fill the hole.

It is a lot of fun to be a leader and the more we have the less work it is for the current leaders.

If you are not interested in being a leader how about stepping up as and Adult Helper or Supporter?

Talk to the Group Leader for more on this.

Bush Dance - Cuboree Fundraiser  March 29
Are you up for a good night out, get some people together for some old time fun on the dance floor. The Cuboree Fundraisers - Eleni and Tanya have put in a lot fo effort to make this happen and get or 20+ members to Cuboree in September.

Remember this is not just a Cub Scout activity as they will be asked to come along to for Jamboree fundraising. But if we all ask around I am sure we can drum up interest from outside

The Beenleigh Scout Group would like to thank Logan Diggers for awarding us $1000 from last year grant application.

Get Started Vouchers information

Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sports and Racing
Get Started – Funding to help kids participate
Round 3 opens 10am on Monday 10 February 2014

DON'T DELAY WILL GO FAST
2ND ROUND LATER IN 2014

Get Started assists children and young people who can least afford or may otherwise benefit from joining a sport or recreation club. Eligible children and young people are provided with a voucher of up to $150 to help pay for club membership and/or participation fees.

Section Leaders and Group Leaders are encouraged to talk to family members who they feel might benefit from these vouchers. The parent, guardian / carer will need to register for a QGrants account through the website and create a user name and password.

http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/funding/getinthegame/getstarted.html

If the parent, guardian / carer have a Centrelink card they can complete the application form online without the need to do anything else. If they do not have a Centrelink card they can still apply, but they will need to get two referrals which can be the child’s teacher and principal.

Once the vouchers have been claimed they should be handed to the Section Leader. The Group Leader is asked to collate and forward all Vouchers to the Grants and Project Officer at the Queensland Branch Support Office, who will arrange for the vouchers to be redeemed and the funds transferred to the Groups account.

If the application is for a new member the Voucher must accompany an A5 application form. The Group can decide to use the $150 towards the registration fee and any excess charges will need to be paid in addition to the voucher. If the full $150 is not required to be used towards registration fees then the Group will be reimbursed the difference.

If the member already exists the $150 will be returned to the Group who can chose to apply it to the Group fees, refund the family or hold it for next year.

Who can apply?
Children and young people from the age of five and under the age of 18 who are residents of Queensland and:
• hold or whose parent, guardian / carer holds a Centrelink Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card
• Other children or young people identified by two referral agents (http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/funding/getinthegame/referral-agents.html)
*The eligibility criteria are applied at the time of application.
If a child is eligible for Get Started, they are not guaranteed a voucher. The funding will be distributed in two rounds each year on a first come, first served basis. Once the allocation for each round is exhausted, the program will close and no further vouchers will be offered for that round.

How to apply? Parents, Guardians and Carers
All eligible children and young people in receipt of a voucher in 2013 are eligible to reapply for a voucher in 2014.

A QGrants account is required to apply for a voucher. Applicants must use their personal email address and personal QGrants account to apply for a voucher. They can register for a QGrants account at any time and are encouraged to register for an account prior to the next voucher release.

[Important: Do not use a mobile phone or tablet device; you will not be able to complete the application process.]

Where can I present the voucher?
The Scout Association of Australia, Queensland Branch Inc. is registered to redeem vouchers against the cost of membership. Vouchers should be handed to Section Leaders who will pass them to Group Leaders to collate and submit the Queensland Branch Support Office where they will be redeemed and funds transferred to the Group account.

Voucher expiry
Vouchers expire approximately three months after the round opens. If vouchers are not presented to the Scout Group before the expiry date, the child or young person will not be eligible for another voucher until the next calendar year.

Car Wash, Car Boot Sale & Cake Stall - March 1

Sign On Weekend - Feb 8 & 9

Dear Group

SIGN ON WEEKEND
BEENLEIGH MARKETPLACE
SATURDAY FEB 8 - 9 AM TO 4 PM
SUNDAY FEB 9 - 10:30 AM TO 4 PM

This weekend the Beenleigh Scout Group will be holding a stall at the Beenleigh Marketplace, outside BB Cafe. We are seeking to increase our Joey Mob and Venturer Unit this year and this is the main focus of the weekend.

I will be there all weekend, but if you would like to help out for a couple of hours over the weekend, we have limited spaces available due to only having a small space to work in. At this time we need up to 2 extra people to assist me in this.

Times available:
  • Saturday: 1:pm - 4pm ,
  • Sunday: 10:30 am - 12:30 pm, 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm, 2:30 pm - 4 pm.

I see the heaviest traffic will be from 11 am through to 2 pm each day.
At this stage due to the limited space I am not requesting youth members attend, but if they do Joey Scouts and Cub Scouts can only be present for no more than 1 hour as it will not be a very exciting day for them and we can not have them running around chasing one another.

For those youth members 10 years and over, I am happy to have you present but as I have not sought permission for you to attend I will require your parents to remain and only for the 2 hours I am seeking at the most.

It is all about selling what we do and how new members can become part of the fun and adventure we provide.

I would be very happy with drop in for 10 minutes at the most.

If attending it is a full uniform activity as we are promoting Scouting and we need every one who comes in to be dressed to impress.

If you can spare time please let me know, else if you are passing by say hi, as sitting next to BB Cafe as an ex  Cub Scout Leader I think I will be going insane from the temptation to overdose on caffine products :)
