What happens at Scouts?

Each section has dedicated leaders ,who volunteer their time, in running structured scouting activities. These activities are based on a core teachings that will lead youth members in earning badges. The goal in each section is to provide youth members with an opportunity to explore:

  • who they are,
  • challenge them to:
    • do their best,
    • work towards goals, and
    • provide opportunities to be leaders in the sections.

Activity Planning

Joey and Cub section activities are fully organised by the leaders and work toward earning the badges.

The Cub Section members are organised into groups, called Sixes. Each group has a leader (Sixer) and an assistant leader (Second). Their job is to step up and help mentor the cubs in that section and do special duties, such as break the Australian Flag. In being leaders they are asked to attend Pack Councils, once a term, to provide feedback and add their suggestions to activities they would like to see run on nights and at camps.

In the Scouts, Youth Members are assigned to patrols, with a Patrol Leader and Assistant Patrol Leader. The PL and APL plan nightly activities and provide input into camps. By providing this level of leadership, youth members are given a chance to step up and coordinate activities, the skills attained will help them through the high school years and later in life. It also provides an opportunity for ownership of their patrols and a sense of achievement, when things run well. The adult leaders attend each week and are there for support and mentoring to ensure that activities run smoothly, and coordinate camps.

The Venturer section is completely run as a unit. They have one committee that plan out all activities. The Venturer Leader is there as moral support, as a mentor and to ensure that the activities are within the bounds of scouting rules and regulations.

In the end, the final goal for a youth members time in Scouting is to:
  • learn by doing,
  • develop leadership skills,
  • experience different activities possibly not available at home,
  •  have heaps of fun,
  •  provide an opportunity to develop into 'Good Citizens' of the community, and
  •  take away skills that can be used their entire life
